Comparing Backup Types

It is necessary to examine a company’s needs and budget, balancing the two to get the best disaster recovery system the company is willing to afford. Among the needs to look at are how much data is changed and at what frequency it is changed.

  • Full backups: If there are a large number of changes to data and there is the money available, then full backups are recommended. This guarantees that the data will be recovered in the quickest time available.

  • Differential and full backups: If there are a large number of changes to data, and money is not available for full backups, then differential + full is recommended. This would allow data to be restored with a maximum of two sets of backup media—the last full backup and the last differential backup.

  • Incremental and full backups: If data changes are minimal, then incremental + full would be the most efficient backup type. This could result in using more tapes, but the space taken by the data would be relatively small.

  • Full, differential, and incremental together: It is possible to use all three backup types in a combined fashion. This is the general practice for organizations where huge amounts of data need to be backed up or when there are long periods between full backups.
