1. Choose Start➪All Programs➪Windows Defender.

2. In the resulting Windows Defender window, choose Tools➪Options. In the Options dialog box that appears, select the Automatically Scan My Computer check box if it’s not already selected, and then choose the frequency, time of day, and type of scan from the drop-down lists.

3. To ensure that your scan uses the latest definitions for malware (a kind of spyware with malicious intent), select the Check for Updated Definitions Before Scanning check box.

4. Scroll down to the bottom of the Options dialog box and make sure that the Use Windows Defender check box is enabled (checked) to activate the program.

5. Click Save to save your settings.

If you want to exclude certain files or locations from the regular scans, you can use the Advanced Options in the Windows Defender dialog box. Click the Add button and browse for the location or file you want to exclude.
