Domino is based on the client/server architecture, where the server serves clients by providing services like messaging, scheduling, and access to shared applications. The Domino family includes various servers and clients, which are described in the following sections.
Domino R6 Servers
A Domino server is a powerful software platform used to perform tasks such as routing messages to Notes and the Internet; allowing users to browse the Web; hosting applications for Notes, Web, and mobile users; and providing real-time integration with enterprise data.
Based on their functionality, Domino servers can be categorized as follows:
-
Domino Messaging server. This server is used only for messaging and supports Notes mail in addition to Internet standards for mail, such as SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), POP3 (Post Office Protocol Version 3), IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol), and Web mail.
-
Domino Utility server. This server provides application services only. This server does not include support for messaging services but supports Domino clusters.
-
Domino Enterprise server. This server has the built-in features of the Mail and Utility servers. Additionally, it provides features such as clustering for failover and load balancing.
Domino R6 Clients
Domino clients access the Domino server to perform functions such as sending e- mail, accessing databases, and Web browsing. Various Domino clients are as follows:
-
Notes client. This client is for end users. It can be used for tasks such as messaging, Web browsing, organizing schedules, and accessing applications.
-
Administrator client. This client is for administrators. It is used for all types of administrative tasks, such as registering the Domino server, registering users, and setting up and managing the Domino infrastructure.
-
Domino Designer client. This client is for application developers. It provides an integrated development environment that allows you to develop Domino applications for various purposes.
Besides these three clients, some other clients that can access a Domino server include:
-
Web browsers, such as Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator
-
Internet mail clients, such as Outlook Express
-
Mobile clients, such as WAP-enabled cellular phones and PDA
